A Year of Growth: An Apprentice’s Journey to On-Road Technician

Dan Ballance, now a technician at Johnson & Towers in Mt. Laurel, NJ, recently celebrated his promotion from technician apprentice to technician. He has progressed rapidly, demonstrating a strong work ethic and a keen interest in marine mechanics.

Dan’s career with Johnson & Towers began when his father, a fishing tournament regular, connected with the Johnson & Towers sales and service teams at the 2023 MidAtlantic Tournament. They mentioned the constant need for technicians, and the company’s willingness to train apprentices through Indel Power Group’s Technician Apprenticeship Program.

With previous experience as a marine mechanic at a family friend’s shop, Dan was eager to seize the opportunity to expand his knowledge, particularly of the mtu product line, and transition into a role that would help him reach his career goal: to become an on-road marine technician. He applied, and after a quick interview process, Dan joined the team.

“I was confident in his ability to be a successful technician based on his previous experience and strong work ethic. I’m familiar with the company he worked for, and their quality standards match ours. He is goal-oriented, knows what he wants, and is willing to put in hard work to get there,” says Dillion Boyle, On-Highway Service Manager, reflecting on his interview with Dan.

Dan was paired with his peer mentor, Josh Crippen, an experienced Mt. Laurel technician who according to Dillon possesses excellent leadership qualities to train an apprentice.

“Josh taught me everything I know about mtu. He spent my first month and a half working with me every day and teaching the ins and outs of the product. After that, I was able to work mostly on my own,” says Dan.

In his current role, Dan is involved in a variety of tasks, from custom jobs and engine painting to oil and coolant fills and gear installations. His dedication and efficiency have earned him recognition, as he consistently meets deadlines and delivers high-quality work.

Dan’s next step is a transfer to the Egg Harbor location, where he will work alongside experienced road technicians, visiting marine vessels and making repairs onsite. This move will provide him with the hands-on experience and training necessary to become a skilled marine road technician, fulfilling his goal.
